The evaluation of a general college biology course taught by a combination of lectures, readings, small group discussions, and student-initiated activities, contains a list of the topics introduced in each of three semesters, the facilities available to students in conducting their individually designed research projects, audio-visual material available to staff and students for use in discussion groups, and vitae of the staff teaching the course. Positive and negative student and staff comments are reported. Statistically significant gains between the beginning and end of the course on the BSCS Comprehensive Examination, the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal, and n interest inventory are demonstrated. Correlations with average grade in the course and gains on each of the three test instruments used are reported for 17 student variables. Copies of term examination papers, a list of titles of student research reports, and a copy of the interest in biology inventory are appended. (AL)
