The qualifications for continuing professional education to be eligible to be a profession are spelled out. Then the efforts of the conference speakers and discussants are divided into seven major categories of testing the criteria of a model for the viability of a profession. The categories included: continuing professional education as a profession, models to define and explore problems, established facts and basic science, new ideas, continuing education and development of new occupations, economic and financial considerations, and the role of the consumer.
