Types of science courses considered desirable and essential for 13-16 year old English students of average and below average ability are discussed in this publication which was the preliminary planning paper for the Nuffield Foundation "Secondary Science" course designed for students who do not intend to major in science. Eight main themes: Interdependence of Living Things; Continuity of Life; Biology of Man; Harnessing Energy; Extension of Sense Perception; Movement; Using Materials; and The Earth and Its Place in the Universe are identified as feasible and significant to these pupils. The organization and themes presented are illustrative, and not prescriptive. Two themes are broken down into fields of study, each of which is further subdivided to indicate possible topics. Suggested teaching techniques are indicated for each topic. There are also some suggested pupil activities for one of these themes to indicate teaching methods relevant to the pupils. (AL)
