This booklet is written for use in university and college courses on the teaching of reading in the elementary grades. It is also written to assist supervisors, teachers, teacher assistants, and student teachers in knowing what to teach in reading and in planning activities to help children learn to read to their maximum potential. Parents also can find in the booklet ways to provide assistance in aiding their children to acquire proficiency in reading. The first part of the booklet deals with general and specific aims of reading instruction, general reading skills, and word recognition skills. Part 2 lists activities in the following areas: (1) readiness, (2) beginning reading, (3) word recognition, (4) vocabulary development, (5) comprehension, (6) recreational and supplementary reading, (7) reading speed, and (8) oral reading.
