The Effects of Work Rate Upon Job Satisfaction.

The principal hypothesis in this research is that discrepancies from a person's preferred rate of work are associated with dissatisfaction and that an inverted-U relationship exists between the discrepancies and job satisfaction. A group of 40 workers were hired especially for the study, and were trained in assembly and inspection. After a 4-day learning period, a base rate was calculated which represented each worker's preferred rate of work. On the fifth day, they were assigned to a compulsory rate based on the preferred rate, and job satisfaction, fatigue, and boredom were calculated. None of the analyses with respect to the hypotheses were significant, but when perceived work rate was compared to actual work rate, the results were consistent with the predictions for the actual rate of work, satisfaction, fatigue, and boredom. One of the limitations of the study was that the direction of causality could not be established for the relationship among the variables. (Author)
