Facts and Fallacies About the Older Worker.
John F. Kennedy Family Service Center, Inc., Charlestown, MA.
The John F. Kennedy Family Service Center in Boston operated a 3-year experimental project to provide assistance to "hard core" unemployed senior citizens. The participants in the program were interviewed and tested to ascertain their abilities and interests. Vocational counselors then contacted employers to arrange for job interviews and placement. Of a total of 667 persons placed by the Center, 307 were direct placements and 360 persons found jobs by themselves. The project showed that employers can be made to realize that the hiring and retaining of the older worker can be an asset, and that there is a need for more demonstration programs to provide comprehensive supportive services to the older worker.
