A Report on Developmental Studies of a Series of Measures of Inquiry Skill in Biology, Explorations in Biology.
Koos, Eugenia M.
Validity and reliability data for the first three of the Mid-Continent Regional Educational Laboratory (McREL) tests of the inquiry skills of secondary school biology students are tabulated and discussed. Two of the tests, Explorations in Biology (EIB) numbers 1 and 3, and SE 011 334, SE 011 335, SE 011 336, and SE 011 337 meet minimum criterion levels for alternate use in testing progress in learning inquiry skills when corrections are made for differences in maximum possible scores and differences in difficulty. The second test in the series is not recommended for such use at this stage. Scores on the two booklets in each test, designed to measure different inquiry skills, do not have high correlations. Correlations with the Biological Sciences Curriculum Science (BSCS) Comprehensive Final Examination scores, the California or Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, and the Scholastic High School Placement Test are reported for EIB 1 and 3. The BSCS test scores were not related to either EIB-1 or EIB-3, but the California Test of Basic Skills was moderately related to both forms. Means and standard deviations of the three EIB forms are reported for each class in which they were used in 1970 trials. (AL)
