A Report on Developmental Studies of a Series of Measures of Inquiry Skills in Biology, Explorations in Biology.
Koos, Eugenia M.
Problems in assessing the validity and reliability of the Mid-Continent Regional Educational Laboratory (McREL) tests of the inquiry skills of biology students are discussed by reference to the first trial version of the first Explorations in Biology (EIB) booklets. Since students learn during the two parts of the test, coefficients of stability are considered inappropriate statistics of reliability. Measures of internal consistency are considered relevant if there is a general inquiry skill. There is some evidence consistent with the assumption of a general factor. Content validity was assessed by a panel of judges working through the items in one possible response pattern, and preliminary estimates of Scott's pi obtained. Appropriate data for an estimate of concurrent validity were not available, but the nature of acceptable data is discussed. Correlation between the Verbal and Numerical Reasoning subtest of the Differential Aptitude Test is used as evidence of construct validity for the EIB items involving verbal formulation of biological problems, verbal interpretation of non-verbal data, and analysis of graphical or tabular data. Appendices summarize the data obtained in the trials, and report on the study of judges agreement or content validity. (AL)
