As one of the units on Native Americans developed by public school teachers enrolled in a University of Minnesota extension course on American Indian education, this grade-6 unit has as its overall objective the sensitization of the class to the cultural values of the Chippewa and Sioux residents of Minnesota reservations as contrasted to middle-class urban white culture. Included in the unit are objectives, guidelines for evaluating books about American Indians, activities to correlate with the unit (e.g., writing to an Indian pen pal, making Indian handicrafts), lesson plans for 14 days, and a bibliography.
