The TV Director/Interpreter.
Lewis, Colby
The television director's job is to convey the meaning of the action which passes before his camera so that it is clear, its content is engrossing, and its presentation achieves the desired result. This textbook concentrates on the pictures and flow of action which are the director's tools for achieving his effect. The emphasis is on pictorial composition of each shot and transition between shots, rather than on the quality of acting which the director helps the performers achieve. Each chapter presents and explains a series of elementary rules, concerning, for example, the placement of the camera to achieve visual clarity. Most of the book concerns visual communication and camera use, but a chapter is also devoted to audio techniques. (JK)
