GRADES OR AGES: Junior high school. SUBJECT MATTER: Communication, a creative approach to teaching English and the arts. ORGANIZATION AND PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: The guide has 17 lesson series, each including objectives, materials, procedures, and assignments. There is no time limit on any of the lesson series or on the unit, which may be taught quickly or interspersed with the study of language skills or other subjects. Appendix A includes lesson plans and activities prepared by teachers and students who field-tested the unit. The guide is mimeographed, bound with a metal fastener, and has a soft cover. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES: The unit is designed to stimulate students to communicate openly and sensitively with all that surrounds them. The objectives for each lesson series are given and many activities are suggested. These are to be omitted or extended as sensitive interaction develops between teacher and students. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Full details of all resource materials are given for each lesson, but the teacher is free to substitute materials of his own choosing. Appendix B lists all the materials in one bibliography. STUDENT ASSESSMENT: Writing is not graded but discussed, and is treated only as an effective way of expressing personal reactions to class stimuli and the world in general. (MBM)
