Problems and Issues in the Education of Exceptional Children.
Jones, Reginald L., Ed.
The collection of articles focusing upon problems and issues in the psychology and education of exceptional children emphasizes divergence and areas of conflict which represent the reality confronting special educators. The readings are intended as a supplement to survey textbooks on the psychology and education of exceptional children or as a sourcebook for advanced courses. Six sections cover issues and problems related to the education of the gifted, mentally retarded, speech and hearing handicapped, learning disabled, visually handicapped, and emotionally disturbed. Issues of diagnosis and identification, as well as educational controversies, are treated. The final section concerns problems and issues in professional special education, covering such topics as diagnostic categories and labeling practices, assessment and remediation practices, and the validity of special education for the mentally retarded and for inner city black children.
