Requirements for SPIRES II. An External Specification for the Stanford Public Information Retrieval System.
Parker, Edwin B.
SPIRES (Stanford Public Information Retrieval System) is a computerized information storage and retrieval system intended for use by students and faculty members who have little knowledge of computers but who need rapid and sophisticated retrieval and analysis. The functions and capabilities of the system from the user's point of view are described in this manual. The three categories of users who may interact with the system are defined as searcher, updater, and file manager. The role of the user consultant is described as managing the system and providing information to facilitate use. Such functional areas as file definition, file maintenance, searching, retrieval, and output are surveyed. The hardware and software configuration of the system and the effect of this configuration on data organization is described. A transcription of a file definition session illustrates the method of file definition used by the system. The process used to maintain and update files and the commands used in searching and retrieval are listed and explained. Various options for displaying output are described. (JY)
