Learning Potential: A Supplementary Procedure for Assessing the Ability to Reason in the Educable Mentally Retarded. Volume 1, Number 1.
A discussion of learning potential among educable retardates reflects the author's findings that some solved difficult problems on the Kohs block designs, some did not do well at first but improved after coaching, and some did not do well before or after coaching. Additional studies of these highscorers, gainers, and nongainers are cited which explored performances on other kinds of tasks. The argument is presented that the high scorer and probably the gainer are more clearly educationally retarded and suffer in the usual special classes where their weaknesses in language arts and reading are continually exposed. It is suggested that increased attention be given to non-language abilities through nonverbal presentations and methods. (RJ)
