This is the first in a series of reports, based exclusively on interview data, which concerns the initial reactions to the university experience of a random sample of 100, class of 1966 freshmen. Information is presented on the students' decision to attend college, their reactions to the first few weeks of university experience, their attitudes and opinions about the university, their involvement in university life, their attitudes toward faculty and course work, and their future goals. Open-ended questions which permitted maximum flexibility were asked of the proportional sample of 34 resident men, 23 commuter men, 25 resident women and 18 commuter women. Impressionistic generalizations, complemented by representative quotations of the students, as well as tables indicating dimensions of students' responses and percentage of students responding in a certain way are presented in the report.
