A Theoretical Model of Oral Communication Experiences in the General Education Program of the Community College.
Atherton, Frederick W.
This study attempted to identify those areas of oral communication which should be considered in planning community college programs of general education. Two instruments--based on a survey of the professional literature in the field of speech and of the opinions of English instructors in higher education in Florida--were designed to assess the relative degrees of importance of these areas and were submitted to selected English and speech instructors teaching at the community college and 4-year college levels. Responses to the instruments were combined with an analysis of the previously identified needs for community colleges and provided a basis for the creation of a model of oral communication experiences to be used in planning the oral communication component of the general education program at the community college level.
