A Determination of Basic Urban Environmental Understandings Important for Inclusion in the Elementary School Curriculum.
Ronfeldt, Leo Leonard
The purpose of this study was to determine those environmental understandings important for inclusion in the elementary school curriculum and basic to the knowledge of the urban environment. A survey instrument was developed for this study which presented 104 understandings in the general areas of air, land use, man-made resources, water, and urban ecology. The instrument was submitted to a critic panel of 60 educators and 30 conservationists who rated the understanding s on importance for inclusion in the elementary curriculum and importance for understanding the urban environment. Ninety-eight understandings were rated highly by both critic groups. A high level of agreement was found between elementary teachers and curriculum specialists, and among the conservationists. (EB)
