The Development of Written Estonian. Indiana University Publications, Uralic and Altaic Series, Volume 90.
Kurman, George
The subject of this book is the development of written Estonian from its beginnings in the 13th century up to the last few decades. This work also attempts to bring out points not made in previous works and pays special attention throughout to the role of Finnish influence. Following the Introduction, chapters deal with the periods (1) from the 13th through the 18th century, including the adoption of the old orthography; (2) from 1800 to 1905, including the adoption of the new orthography; and (3) from 1905 to 1937, the time of reform and normalization. An epilogue, appendixes on significant works, textual examples and a dialect map, and a bibliography conclude the volume. (AMM)
