Children's Language; A Package of Materials for the South Carolina Elementary Teacher on Dialect Differences in the Classroom.
South Carolina State Dept. of Education, Columbia.
The great variety of language differences in South Carolina has created some problems which this program, developed by the South Carolina State Department of Education, aims to overcome. The present package of materials was designed to provide the elementary teacher of grades 1, 2, and 3 with a general background of information and a specific approach to the problem. The kit contains: (1) a 15-question quiz intended to introduce the teacher to the conceptions and misconceptions of dialect differences in children's language; (2) a long-playing record of the dialects of students from South Carolina and suggestions about classroom activities and oral exercises, accompanied by a printout of the exercise verses; (3) a book entitled "Some Specifics," which gives actual case studies of special problems concerning the "disadvantaged black" and the "disadvantaged white" dialects; (4) 30 booklets (2" x 2") designed to enable the student to discover inductively some truths about language; (5) a list of films available free on loan from the South Carolina State Film Library, with accompanying teacher's brochure; and (6) a booklet listing and describing other programs about children's language.
