This teaching guide on composition for grades 7-12 has been designed as a supplement to aid in encouraging the student to understand the importance of the spoken and written word. Included are sections on (1) research in grammar and usage, with annotated assessments of more than 50 current studies, (2) sentence structure, with lesson plans on variety, syntax, effective transitions, coherence, and unity, (3) style and choice of words, with an emphasis on vocabulary development, (4) paragraphs and multi-paragraphs, with lesson plans on narrative, descriptive, and expository writing, and (5) evaluation, with a discussion of criteria and methods for grading student papers. An appendix contains such supplementary teaching resources as topics for discussion and writing, and units on propaganda, role playing, and transitional devices. (DD)
