Survey of House Staff Benefits at Forty-Four Medical Schools.
Gutzwiller, Roberta; Shawhan, Gerald L.
As an aid in evaluating the present and future benefits given house staff personnel (residents, interns, and clinical fellows) at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the Department of Institutional Studies sent out questionnaires concerning benefits extended to house staff personnel to the 46 medical schools using university owned or operated hospitals. Forty four schools responded. This report provides a summary plus an account of each institution's response to the questionnaire, which includes information on (1) the classification of house staff personnel, (2) collective bargaining, (3) the benefits and privileges extended, such as housing or housing allowance, free meals, free personal laundry, and educational privileges, (4) health provisions, (5) retirement and insurance, (6) loans and emergency funds, (7) personal benefits, and (8) stipend information.
