Survey of Specialized Technical Information Centers. Final Report.
Safety Management Inst., Washington, DC.
A study was conducted to determine the most advantageous method of acquiring selected bibliographic data collections specializing in highway safety literature in order to provide the National Highway Safety Documentation Center (NHSDC) with a significant data base. This data base is necessary for NHSDC to accomplish its objective of being a central clearinghouse for information on highway and motor vehicle safety. A survey was made of sixteen technical information centers for highway safety literature, and the information obtained was analyzed to develop the following: (1) recommendations as to which collections should be acquired, (2) a plan for acquiring the data, (3) the tasks to be accomplished for the conversion of acquired data into a form suitable for computer processing, and (4) a determination of the costs involved in accomplishing the acquisition and conversion tasks. Based on an analysis of the sixteen technical information center collections, it is recommended that bibliographic references be acquired from the National Safety Council collection, the collection of safety literature at the Transportation Center Library at Northwestern University, the Highway Research Information Service Collection, and the Highway Safety Research Information Center collection.
