The 19 lessons in these two volumes are intended for the advanced phase of a 159-lesson intensive audiolingual basic Russian course developed recently by the Defense Language Institute to train native speakers of English to a Level 3 second language proficiency. These third and fifth volumes contain such features as (1) texts on the Russian Civil War, the Soviet Union (1920-1921), Lenin's replacement by Stalin, the first 5-year plan, Soviet education, administrative structure, population distribution, agriculture, and industry, (2) literary selections by Tolstoy, Chekhov, Zoshchenko, Averchenko, and Bunin, and (3) poems by Evtushenko and Akmatove. Some of the readings have English to Russian translation exercises. Translation and replacement exercises follow the explanation of a number of basic as well as advanced points of Russian syntax and morphology. Also included are two sections on verbs derived from military terminology, (2) a map of the Soviet Union, and (3) four business documents. (JH)
