Defense Language Institute French Basic Course. Volume I, Lessons 1-15.
Defense Language Inst., Washington, DC.
These 15 lessons are intended for the 3-week initial phase of a 68-lesson intensive audiolingual basic French course developed recently by the Defense Language Institute to train native speakers of English to a Level 3 second language skill proficiency. Designed primarily to enable students to distinguish and produce French sounds accurately enough to understand and speak within the scope of the materials mastered, this first volume includes the entire phonology, first grammar lessons, and preliminary exposure to area studies. The individual lessons for the six hours of daily classroom work include (1) perception drills on new materials, (2) dialog memorization for instant recall, and (3) pattern practice and performance geared to stimulate free conversation. Assignments for three hours of homework daily consist of intensive taped drills on mastered materials, mastery of a certain number of vocabulary items, the study of grammar notes, dialog memorization, and review. Every fifth lesson is a review. For other volumes in the series see FL 001 307, and FL 001 308. (AF)
