Nominalizations in Spanish. Studies in Linguistics and Language Learning, Volume V.
Falk, Julia Sableski
Using methods developed in transformational generative grammar, three types of nominal constructions in Spanish are treated in this paper: Fact nominalizations ("[El] Escribir es agradable"), Manner nominalizations ("El tocar [de la mujer] es agradable"), and Abstract noun nominalizations ("La construccion rapida de esta escuela es dudosa"). While this study is intended primarily as a contribution to the grammar of Spanish, the rules which have been proposed for similar constructions in English are also examined. In some cases, changes are suggested for the English rules when facts about Spanish nominalizations seem revealing for English as well. (Author/JD)
