An investigation into the phonics and sight methods of reading instruction being taught in Uruguay schools seeks valid predictions in support of each approach. The study, written in Spanish, examines the progressive reading habits and abilities of 12 first-grade classes. Teachers assigned to teach each method uniformly had equivalent training and similar qualifications. In addition to being grouped by reading method, the pupils were matched according to their socioeconomic levels. The research attempts to equate pupils' socioeconomic level with the most appropriate reading instruction, and the studies center on the reaction of the pupils in their group relationship. Each group was rated by various language and mental tests. Graphs, charts, and data tables illustrate test results, and the appendixes include teacher, student and parent questionnaires, test result forms, tests, sample reading materials, and psychological profiles on some pupils. Conclusions explain the advantage of both reading methods and the degree to which the techniques affect student spelling, handwriting, and creative writing abilities. (DS)
