Transition to On-Line Information and Reference Retrieval. Experimental Retrieval Systems Studies, Report Number 4.
Smith, William A., Jr.; And Others
An existing experimental document and reference retrieval system operating in batch processing, tape oriented mode was converted to an on-line mode with user interaction. Objectives were faster response time, integration of functions, and system accessibility at user location. Effects on file organization, addressing techniques, file maintenance, communication, scheduling and programming are analyzed. Modification of an existing batch oriented system can yeild an effective interactive search capability. Realization of full benefits of the on-line concept, particularly maintenance of the document base, requires system redesign rather than extension of existing procedures. User reaction to the experimental system was favorable although a variety of improvements were suggested for an operational environment. Output of associativity indicators was valuable in reformulating search request or in adjusting the volume of cited references for both experienced and uninitiated users. (Author)
