Elementary School Science: A Design for Subject Matter Selection and Organization.

Developed was a conceptual framework for the selection and organization of the subject matter of science for elementary school curricula. The procedure involved (1) assembling ideas about the structure of science knowledge and about the growth of substantive concepts in elementary school children, and (2) organizing those ideas to form a conceptual framework from which sound decisions can be made for selecting and organizing the subject matter. Literature was reviewed for pertinent facts and ideas relative to descriptions of the phenomena of nature and to intellectual development from the cognitive theorists' viewpoint. One chapter is devoted to intellectual development. Another chapter concerns the structure of science. A third chapter develops and justifies a set of criteria fo r selecting and organizing subject matter. A fourth chapter discusses the subject matter of elementary school science. (BC)
