Hawthorne Revisited: Management and the Worker, Its Critics, and Developments in Human Relations in Industry.
Landsberger, Henry A.
The social-psychological studies of human relations in industry, which appeared in their most complete form in 1939 in "Management and the Worker" are evaluated from the perspective of subsequent studies and in the light of the many critiques made of the original work. The experiments are briefly described and criticisms of the Mayo human relations school of industrial sociology are reviewed. An effort is made to clarify misconceptions of the studies' findings and misinterpretations that have appeared in the extensive literature related to the original studies. Positive contributions of the studies to the development of human relations in industry are described, including the demonstration that empirical research was possible within industry and organizations in general.
