Thai Cultural Reader. Book I.
Jones, Robert B.; And Others
This reader has been designed to provide intermediate level students with readings on a wide range of topics concerning Thai culture and history written in various styles. Students using this reader should have completed elementary study of Thai equivalent to "Spoken Thai," Books I and II, and the "Thai Reader," both by Mary R. Haas. Easy command of the vocabulary and grammar provided in those books is prerequisite to the efficient use of this reader. New vocabulary and explanatory notes are provided for each lesson, but it is expected that some use will have to be made of dictionaires in order to develop facility in using them. To this end, some new words have been omitted. Ideally, students should be able to read the selections rapidly, concentrating on the content and mastering the new vocabulary, without the necessity of painstaking translation. But occasional passages should be prepared in written translation in order to develop skill in that art, skill which is of special importance to students who will be using and quoting from Thai sources in their own research. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the document should contact the author, Robert B. Jones, Jr., Southeast Asia Program, Cornell University, 108 Franklin Hall, Ithaca, New York 14850.
