Teaching English to Immigrants. Education Today: Language Teaching.
Derrick, June
Based largely on instructional methods and techniques for school age pupils, but also amenable to use with adults, this book is designed for persons teaching English to immigrants in Britain. The language problems posed by non-English speaking students and speakers of nonstandard English, the structural situational approach to language teaching, and organizational problems of full time and part time instruction are discussed in the first chapter. The next chapter sets forth a multiple stage scheme of work (including questioning techniques). Other chapters focus on pronunciation, techniques and procedures in oral teaching, reading and writing, "remedial" language teaching of West Indian and other pupils or students, and audiovisual aids. The document includes chapter booklists and an extensive classified bibliography. (ly)
