Science in the Junior High School: A Course of Study and Teaching Guide for Grades 7, 8, 9.

This course of study was developed under the supervision of the State Department of Education and in cooperation with junior high school teachers, senior high teachers, school administrators, and college and university personnel. It is being made available in order to help teachers lead youngsters to become "actively engaged in the science process and to acquire the needed understandings, skills, attitudes, and appreciations in science." The introduction deals with such matters as (1) curriculum organization, (2) safety rules, (3) teaching of science, (4) instructional techniques and procedures, (5) the scientific attitude, and (6) student achievement evaluation. Part II gives the topical outlines for (1) seventh grade general science, (2) eighth grade earth and life science, and (3) ninth grade physical science. The Course of Study, Part III, is organized according to (1) topical outline, (2) corresponding understandings to be stressed, and (3) corresponding suggested activities. The Handbook Section, Part IV, provides comprehensive experiments, extended activities, and demonstrations. Appendixes provide additional material on (1) evaluation guidelines for a good science program, (2) equipment list, and (3) references. (DH)
