A METHOD TO ADAPT THE WASHINGTON PRE-COLLEGE TESTING PROGRAM FOR USE IN A WASHINGTON JUNIOR COLLEGE.
MORGAN, DON ALVA
TO DETERMINE THE POSSIBILITY OF IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF PREDICTING FIRST QUARTER GRADE POINT AVERAGES FOR ENTERING FRESHMEN AT CLARK COLLEGE, REGRESSION ANALYSIS WAS USED TO ESTABLISH EQUATIONS FOR PREDICTING GRADE AVERAGES FROM SCORES EARNED IN THE WASHINGTON PRE-COLLEGE TESTING PROGRAM. PREVIOUS PREDICTION HAD BEEN BASED ON FORMULAS DERIVED FROM A STATEWIDE USE OF THE TESTING PROGRAM. EFFICIENCY OF PREDICTION FROM THE REGRESSION EQUATIONS WAS TESTED IN A VALIDATION STUDY, WHICH OBTAINED PREDICTIONS WHICH WERE (1) WITHIN THE EXPECTED RANGE OF ERROR FOR MATHEMATICS-SCIENCE-ENGINEERING MAJORS, (2) CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT OVER EXPECTED ERROR FOR SOCIAL SCIENCE-HUMANITIES AND APPLIED ARTS MAJORS, (3) LOW IN EFFICIENCY FOR MAJORS IN BUSINESS AND SECRETARIAL SCIENCE, AND (4) SLIGHTLY LESS EFFICIENT THAN EXPECTED IN THE MID-RANGES OF UNDECIDED-LOWER DIVISION STUDENTS, THOUGH MORE EFFICIENT FOR THOSE MORE THAN ONE STANDARD ERROR ABOVE AND BELOW THE MEAN. THE STUDY ILLUSTRATED THE DANGERS IN APPLYING AT ONE INSTITUTION PREDICTIVE MEASURES DEVELOPED AT ANOTHER UNLESS THEIR VALIDITY HAS BEEN TESTED FOR THE SPECIFIC SITUATION. THIS DOCUMENT IS A PH.D. DISSERTATION, WRITTEN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND, OREGON. (WO)
