THE ADULT BASIC CURRICULUM INCLUDES READING SKILLS, LANGUAGE ARTS, AND CONCEPTS IN MATHEMATICS, CITIZENSHIP, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY LIFE, AND ADJUSTMENT TO THE WORKING WORLD. TO COPE WITH SUCH PROBLEMS AS LOW STUDENT MOTIVATION AND SELF-IMAGE, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DEPRIVATION, FEAR AND HOSTILITY, AND VALUES AND BEHAVIOR AT VARIANCE WITH MIDDLE-CLASS AND UPPER-CLASS NORMS, THE TEACHER NEEDS ABOVE AVERAGE RESOURCEFULNESS AND HUMAN UNDERSTANDING, AND MUST DEVELOP SKILL IN SELECTING AND USING PRINTED MATERIALS (NOTABLY THE MAJOR SEQUENTIAL LITERACY SYSTEMS), AUDIOVISUAL AIDS, CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES, COUNSELING ACTIVITIES, AND STANDARDIZED TESTS. IN WORKING WITH NON-ENGLISH-SPEAKING ADULTS, ORAL TEACHING SHOULD BE STRESSED.
