A METHOD OF "PRINCIPAL ACTOR ROLE" CLASSIFICATION WAS USED TO EXAMINE THE INTERACTION OF A GROUP OF BRIGHT, UNDERACHIEVING FIFTH GRADERS. IN THIS METHOD, THE PERSON WHO IS THE CENTER OF THE GROUP'S ATTENTION AT ANY GIVEN TIME (EITHER BY TALKING OR BY NONVERBAL BEHAVIOR) IS TERMED THE "PRINCIPAL ACTOR." OBSERVERS CLASSIFY THE VERBAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE PRINCIPAL ACTOR IN 28 PRINCIPAL ACTOR ROLES AND THE RESPONSES OF GROUP MEMBERS IN 4 RESPONSE CATEGORIES. ANALYSIS OF THE INTERACTION RECORD PROVIDED AN INDICATION OF RESPONSE PATTERNS OF INDIVIDUALS BOTH TO PRINCIPAL ACTOR ROLES AND TO OTHER INDIVIDUALS. PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN ALSO MET FOR GROUP COUNSELING. ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE PREDICTED CHANGES IN THE STUDENTS DID NOT OCCUR, UNSOLICITED REPORTS FROM GROUP PARTICIPANTS INDICATED SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN FAMILY RELATIONS WHICH RESULTED IN SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT OF SOME OF THE CHILDREN. AN ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATION OF THE CLASSIFICATION PROCESS WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE ACCURACY OF VERBAL CLASSIFICATIONS MADE FROM TAPE RECORDINGS OF THE GROUP SESSIONS BY COMPARISON WITH CLASSIFICATION BASED ON KINESCOPES OF THE SESSIONS.
