Introductory materials in the teacher edition include information on use, instructional/task analysis, academic and workplace skill classifications and definitions, related academic and workplace skill list, and crosswalk to Association of Surgical Technologists core curriculum objectives. Each module of instruction in the teacher edition includes some or all of these components: suggested activities, transparency masters, teacher supplements, written test and key, assignment sheets answers, optional assignment sheets and answers, and module review and answers. Each module in the student edition includes some or all of these components: learning activities sheet, module objective sheet, information sheet, student supplements, assignment sheets, and job sheets. Modules are designed for more than one lesson or class period of instruction. These four sections contain 17 modules as follows: orientation to surgical technology (professional responsibilities and relations, interpersonal relationships and communication skills, legal and ethical responsibilities); safety (environmental, work place); microbiology (introduction, infection and immunology, wound healing); pharmacology (basic math, weights and measures, syringes and hypodermic needles, pharmacologic agents, anesthesia); and biomedical science (computer skills, electricity, applied physics, robotics). Abstract:
This curriculum for a medical assistant program is designed for students interested in caring for the sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled under the direction of the family, physicians, and credentialed nurses. The curriculum is divided into 12 units: orientation to medical assisting; principles of medical ethics; risk management; infection control and hazards management; anatomy, physiology, pathology, and psychology; medical database; patient examinations; patient education; medications; medical emergencies and facility safety; laboratory procedures; and general office procedures. Each unit is composed of 2-5 objectives; a number of performance indicators are listed for each objective. The program is designed to include classroom instruction via lectures, demonstrations, and discussions. Hospitals, medical centers, nursing home or care centers, or medical-surgical clinics often work cooperatively with schools to provide students with clinical practice and experience. (YLB)

Abstract:
This practical manual is designed to help medical officers in small hospitals provide safe and effective anesthesia for patients. Intended for doctors with at least one year of postgraduate clinical experience, it describes anesthetic techniques suitable for use in hospitals with limited resources. Chapter 2 describes fundamental principles and techniques underlying the practice of anesthesia and outlines immediate and continuing care of critically ill or unconscious patients. Chapter 3 focuses on continuing care of unconscious and anesthetized patients. The focus of Chapter 4 is on the principles of fluid and electrolyte therapy. Chapters 5 and 6 cover patient assessment before anesthesia and general anesthesia. Chapter 7 concerns safe clinical use of anesthetic equipment best-suited for and most likely found in district hospitals. Chapter 8 contains examples of general anesthetic techniques feasible in small or medium-sized hospitals. Chapter 9 provides information on drugs. Chapter 10 suggests techniques for conduction anesthesia. Chapters 11 and 12 discuss choosing and planning the anesthetic technique and postoperative care of the patient. Chapters 13 and 14 discuss special needs of pediatric and obstetric anaesthesia and important medical conditions. Chapter 15 covers oxygen, gas supplies, equipment, and maintenance. Numerous illustrations convey technical details; tables, charts, and checklists summarize lines of action and points to remember. Checklists and an index are appended. (YLB)
