Abstract:
Information services provided by the reference librarians at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) are outlined as an introduction to this document on projected services to the public by the Center for Information Services (CIS). The report discusses the types of data base which may be searched (bibliographic reference tapes, full text and numerical); the patterns of usage; output of the CIS; off-campus services; and the procedural relationships between the UCLA library and the CCN. Appendices to the report contain a schematic of a combined current and retrospective search operation, samples of search request forms and output formats, and a list of data bases for general reference and bibliography. (Volumes I and II of Phase I of this project -- the planning stages -- are available as LI 004165 and LI 004166.) (SJ)

Abstract:
The essay describes the origin and functioning of the largest scientific library in Europe, the National Lending Library for Science and Technology in Britain, (NLL). This Library lends almost entirely by mail, at a rate approaching one million items per year. After outlining the origins of the NLL in government circles shortly after World War II, it attempts to present the picture of its operations today under the following heads: Coverage and Acquisition; Principles of Storage; Records; Techniques of Postal Lending; Personnel Structure; The Reading Room; Russian Translating Program; The Educational Campaign. Some prospects for the future are surveyed in the conclusion. Throughout the essay, emphasis is laid on the innovative approach of the library's first Director, Dr. D. J. Urquhart, and the successes his techniques have had in coping with the national problem of disseminating scientific information in Britain. A bibliography is included. (Author/SJ)

Abstract:
The aim was to design a seminar which would allow time for each individual to grow into the subject, to reflect, to participate in discussions, to come back to points as appropriate -- the antithesis of a 'crash course'. The intention was to give all participants a representative introduction to the whole range of what is now available, and to discuss with them the ramifications of computerized information services in the three areas of main concern: in library-acquiring, systematizing, and providing service from, machine-readable information stores. Thus a format that was as much like a full-scale academic course as possible was chosen. A 10-week program was established with attendance based upon a commitment of two half days per week. The appropriate pedigogical setting was provided by the seminar rooms of the School of Library Service and the Campus Computing Network. Part II of this report contains the outlines of the seminar sessions. (For related documents see LI 003295-003299 and LI 003301). (Author/NH)

Abstract:
Early design activities at the Institute of Library Research (ILR) are described in this part of the center for Information Services (CIS) project. Both library aspects and computer aspects of information services from data bases are covered. The appendices present various "read routines" and an inventory of programs written or utilized by ILR staff during this phase. (For related documents see LI 003295-003298 and LI 003300 through LI 003301). (Author/NH)
