Abstract:
This book presents the reflections of 53 award-winning first-year teachers who talk candidly about their successes and setbacks, emphasizing the relationships they formed with colleagues, university professors, and students' parents. It is based on discussions sparked by questions about supports that they needed in their first year of teaching and on their essays from the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher contest. Section 1 presents a message for new teachers that stresses the importance of support and describes new initiatives and national attention to the issue. Section 2 discusses working with veteran teachers, noting rewards and drawbacks. Section 3 focuses on working with parents, explaining why it is important and how to connect with parents. Section 4 discusses working with principals, looking at issues related to professional development, mentors, and discipline. Section 5 examines working with college and university education professors, discussing partnerships with local institutions. Section 6 concludes that first-year teachers need more support. Abstract:
This booklet discusses what teachers may encounter in their first year of teaching, presenting information from teachers themselves. Information comes mainly from a series of discussions held among winners of the First Class Teachers Award sponsored every year by Sallie Mae, a corporation dedicated to education. Focus group discussions with winning teachers addressed such issues as: what the first year was like; what the toughest challenges were; what principals and administrators can do to help; what colleges and universities should know in order to prepare preservice teachers for the real world of teaching; what the greatest rewards were; how the students influenced the experience; whether preparation was sufficient; and what insights experienced teachers had to offer new teachers. The booklet provides resources for further information, offers a checklist of tips from first-year and veteran teachers, and presents acknowledgments of teachers who helped make the book possible. Abstract:
Working with schools and communities across the United States, the Education Commission of the States has learned that people want to express their opinions about schools in their communities. This guide was designed to help engage all sectors of the community in conversations about education. It is suggested that holding a series of meetings about school improvement throughout the year may work best for building community partnerships in which people feel welcome in the decision-making process. The guide uses the example of New American Schools, a nationwide initiative made up of seven school reform networks or "designs." Tools and strategies for planning and hosting meetings, setting agendas, and facilitating discussions are presented. Appendices contain an outline of a discussion about local school improvement efforts. The discussion text incorporates a New American Schools "preview" video that may be ordered separately; samples of meeting agendas, ground rules, and a news release; and a list of resources and contacts.
