Abstract:
Twenty scholarly papers and fifteen abstracts comprise the content of the twelfth annual Brick and Click Libraries Symposium, held at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. The peer-reviewed proceedings, authored by academic librarians and presented at the symposium, portray the contemporary and future face of librarianship. Abstract:
Librarians regularly encounter students who struggle to understand and apply information literacy concepts. A qualitative survey administered to information literacy practitioners asked about troublesome content and analyzed results using the threshold concepts pedagogical framework first described by Jan Meyer and Ray Land. A threshold concept transforms the learner's view of content and helps integrate previously learned material; threshold concepts are portals that, once traversed, bring insight into how to think and act like a practitioner within a discipline. This project uses the data collected to propose seven threshold concepts for information literacy. (Contains 3 figures and 25 notes.) Abstract:
As individuals become more and more comfortable mediating all kinds of situations online and through various technologies, their virtual selves increasingly overlap their "real" lives. Posting a "happy birthday!" message on Facebook is as automatic as dropping a card in the mail. E-mailing relevant links to co-workers happens as naturally as mentioning an interesting article over lunch. Which points toward why the "R" in "Virtual Reference" needs to change if libraries are going to succeed in promoting reference through chat sessions, phone calls, e-mails, texts, mobile applications and other as-of-yet unimagined technologies. Going back to 2005, the authors' research of the use of virtual reference (VR) has had one primary goal: to deliver research-based recommendations that will improve the service that information professionals provide. The purpose of this publication is to distill several years' and several hundred pages' worth of work into a few very specific, easily digestible, actionable suggestions for how individuals can sustain and develop their VR services and systems (Radford and Connaway 2005-2008a). Abstract:
This paper looks at the author's outreach efforts as a distance librarian to encourage library use among a distance student population that comprises satellite locations, students attending online, students attending courses through instructional television, and students attending hybrid courses. Outcomes of the author's outreach attempts and research demonstrating what other librarians have done to reach out to their distance population are discussed. Examples of outreach methods include: collaborating with faculty to blend information literacy instruction into a face-to-face subject specific distance classroom, embedding the librarian into a subject specific class via course management software, and using the reference interview to provide electronic research help to a class. Many distance students never enter the physical library. Librarians serving a distance population are forced to be creative in outreach efforts. Abstract:
EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) has been heavily used by UMUC students since its implementation in fall 2011, but experience has shown that it is not always the most appropriate source for satisfying students' information needs and that they often need assistance in understanding how the tool works and how to use it effectively. UMUC librarians have developed best practices for working with students to help them assess their information needs and to then formulate a search strategy that can help them find all relevant e-resources that could potentially be used to help them answer their research question. Abstract:
Gathering qualitative information about usage behavior of library Web sites is a time-consuming process requiring the active participation of patron communities. Libraries that collect virtual reference transcripts, however, hold valuable data regarding how the library Web site is used that could benefit Web designers. An analysis of virtual reference transcripts played a key role during the 2010 Mississippi State University Libraries' Web site redesign process. The virtual reference project manager partnered with the Web services department to examine chat and e-mail transcripts as a potential source of qualitative Web site usability information. To determine the usefulness of the virtual reference data, chat transcripts were analyzed using a grounded theory model to derive codes for each question asked and each answer given. This information was then aggregated into concepts that offered insights into user behavior online. In an attempt to extract more usage information from the virtual reference data, the Web services department used Wordle to create word frequency charts for e-mail and chat entry questions from September 2008 through May 2010. These data not only offered insights into patterns of user behavior for the Web redesign, but also for the work of the reference department and service providers across the library. Abstract:
Google Scholar is a free service that provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly works and to connect patrons with the resources libraries provide. The researchers in this study analyzed Google Scholar usage data from 2006 for three library tools at San Francisco State University: SFX link resolver, Web Access Management proxy server, and ILLiad interlibrary loan server. Overall, the data suggested that Google Scholar had become a very useful resource in the library and was a significant addition to the library's collection of research databases. SFX data revealed requests from Google Scholar grew ten-fold from 2006 to 2011, and that Google Scholar became the top-ranked SFX source for requests in 2011. Library patrons favored Google Scholar over San Francisco State University's federated search tool, MetaLib, and it has become an important source for interlibrary loan requests. Abstract:
The society relies on institutions of higher education to produce a literate workforce; one that is able to function in a dynamic, technological, information-overload environment. In support of this new thrust, most universities have incorporated the use of new media and ICTs in the teaching learning process resulting in a multi-modal approach (face-to-face, online and distance learning). As such, students are increasingly demanding resources and services that are not limited by time and place. Subsequently, academic libraries extend their services to meet the changing demands of the new cohort of learners. Through the use of electronic books that mirror the features and functions of the printed book and the capacity of the computer, librarians have bridged the gap between the academicians and the world of knowledge to further research and learning. Digital reference service extends the reference desk to the virtual environment to allow the reference librarian to meet the research needs of online users in real-time. These features have removed the barrier of the physical walls of the library and allow the librarian to maintain his/her role as instructors and evaluators of information and resources. This paper seeks to show how libraries have been using these two services to enhance teaching and learning. The paper further shows how students have been benefiting from them through their inclusion in the Mona Library of the University of the West Indies. Abstract:
Since the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) unveiled its WorldCat Local library catalog discovery layer in 2008, library instructors have debated how to incorporate this tool into their teaching. WorldCat Local's faceted searching brings both educational benefits and unexpected challenges to the classroom. Instructors frequently hold formal and informal discussions on such topics as which search features are most effective during teaching and which patron groups benefit most from this tool. The authors of this article surveyed instruction librarians at U.S. academic libraries that are using WorldCat Local in order to gather and organize this feedback.
