Abstract:This book is a step-by-step, concise, and easy-to-read reference for school teams, providers, students, and parents to understand, design, and evaluate positive behavior support (PBS) plans for students with developmental disabilities. It provides a clear conceptual framework on PBS to think critically about how to approach a student's problem behavior proactively. It includes detailed directions on using functional behavioral assessments to design individualized PBS plans for children with examples and completed forms. It clearly illustrates contents of comprehensive PBS including: (1) prevention through antecedent and setting event modifications; (2) teaching alternate skills; (3) designing consequence interventions; and (4) creating long-term supports. An abridged version of the assessment process for students with less intensive problem behavior is also included. The book also comes with a comprehensive case study, two sample support plans, a progress evaluation summary, and frequently asked questions. By implementing these empirical strategies, professionals and parents can not only manage to reduce the occurrence of problem behaviors, but enhance the quality of life of a child with a developmental disability. This new second edition includes: (1) Twice the subject matter of first edition reflecting updates to PBS over past decade; (2) Discussion on School Wide Positive Behavior Support and guiding principles in creating effective support plans; (3) New sections on collaboration and teaming--why it is important, ways to organize school teams, and considerations for person-centered plans; (4) List of tools for conducting functional assessments and how to select them; (5) New chapter on implementing support plans successfully; and (6) An updated comprehensive resource bibliography and research-based references.
