In response to the need for intentional, organized education in speaking, listening, and media literacy, the National Communication Association provides the Standards and Competency Statements in this document. The Standards and Competency Statements are not designed to be used as a curriculum; rather, they are designed to enhance and support curriculum. The Competency Statements under each of the 20 Standards are categorized according to three dimensions of communication competence: knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Within each of those three dimensions, the Competency Statements are grouped according to content and, when appropriate, increasing levels of difficulty. Some of the 20 Standards are: competent communicators demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relationships among the components of the communication process and the influence of the individual, relationship, and situation on communication; competent communicators demonstrate the ability to demonstrate sensitivity to diversity when communicating; competent speakers demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the speaking process, and the ability to adapt communication strategies appropriately and effectively according to the needs of the situation and setting; competent listeners demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the listening process, and the ability to use appropriate and effective listening skills for a given communication situation and setting; and media literate communicators demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ways people use media in their personal and public lives, and the ability to use media to communicate to specific audiences.
