Psychological Testing: Theory and Applications.
Janda, Louis H.
This text prepares students to quantify observations through psychological testing. Measurement is critical in all the subareas of psychology, and the text begins by discussing the applications of testing in the subdisciplines of psychology. The book also discusses the extent to which tests are actually used. Early chapters discuss general principles of measurement and testing, including reliability and validity, and later chapters move to more specific types of test and special purposes for testing. The following chapters are included: (1) "An Introduction to Psychological Testing"; (2) "Measurement and Statistics"; (3) "Norms and the Meaning of Test Scores"; (4) "Reliability"; (5) "Validity"; (6) "Interpreting Validity Coefficients and Decision Making"; (7) "Item Analysis"; (8)"Test Construction"; (9) "Individual Tests of Intelligence"; (10) "Group Ability Tests"; (11) "Issues in Ability Testing"; (12) "Measures of Interests, Attitudes, and Values"; (13) "Structured Measures of Personality"; (14) "Projective Tests and Clinical Assessment"; (15) "Testing in Business and Industry"; (16) "Alternative Approaches to Assessment"; (17) "Neuropsychological Assessment and Testing Special Populations"; and (18) "A Few Thoughts about Tests, Society, and the Future." Five appendixes include four examples of test types and the answers to text exercises. A computerized tutorial for students, with a print overview and study guide and a disk, is also included. (Contains 55 tables, 52 figures, and numerous references.) (SLD)
