Abstract:	Due to the need for nurses to use nursing theories in nursing practice, a theory based nursing process for wellness promotion was applied to an individual in a study. The objectives of the study were to: describe the Roy Adaptation Model for the nursing process; utilize the model for organizing and analyzing assessment data; collect psychosocial, biophysical, and educational assessment data on a well client; write a theory based individualized nursing care plan for the individual; describe five community agencies appropriate for promoting wellness for the individual assessed; and evaluate the applicability of the nursing theory to the plan of care for effectiveness, ease of application, and necessary revisions. The Roy Adaptation Model provides a direction for communicating the theory of the adaptive system while viewing the patient holistically. The study involved a 36-year-old female university professor. An analysis of the client in adaptation modes included the physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence modes. Roy's Adaptation Model provided an effective framework for organizing and collecting data from the client, though major problems in using the model included overlapping of adaptive modes, the value system of the nurse making decisions, an unclear meaning for the term adaptation in relation to growth, and an unclear definition of when need excesses or deficits occur. Three appendices are: data on the client based on Roy's Model; nursing process care plan using Roy's Model; and outline of theory based nursing process. Tables are included. Contains 13 references.
