Abstract:Described is the development and use of a scheme for probing arguments in defense of instructional objectives in science education. The perspective used in the development of the scheme is derived from a consideration of science curriculum as a practical enterprise, in the Aristotelian sense. Such a perspective sees curriculum action as the product of a choice among alternatives; in this case, among alternative sets of objectives. The conceptual foundation of the scheme draws upon Gauthier's analysis of practical reasoning and advice. It is shown that a prescriptive argument must involve premises of two types: the first embodies a value position that characterizes some state as being worthwhile or desirable; the second premise is a statement of fact concerning the attributes of the situation. Examples are included of the application of the scheme to science curriculum guidelines and to statements encountered in science curriculum project materials currently used in North America. (MH)
