Teaching Facial Expressions of Emotion
Lierheimer, Kristin; Stichter, Janine
Beyond Behavior, v21 n1 p20-27 Fall 2011
Many students with exceptionalities, such as Aaron, display challenging behaviors that have a substantial impact on their quality of life and greatly disrupt the educational process (Matson, Wilkins, & Macken, 2009; Westling, 2010). Challenging behavior often causes academic and social difficulties for the students displaying the behavior, interferes with the learning in the classroom, and takes time away from instruction for teachers. One problem that can exacerbate these difficulties is the misunderstanding of facial expressions of emotion. This article will use an example of a student with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to outline the difficulties that students with challenging behaviors have with social competency, in particular the understanding of facial expressions of emotion, and present strategies that can be used to remediate these difficulties. (Contains 3 figures and 3 tables.)
