Asia vs. Europe: Conceptual Framework of the High School World History Curriculum in South Korea
Kang, Sunjoo
Social Studies, v94 n5 p217-224 Sep-Oct 2003
In this article, the author explores the conceptual framework of South Korea's high school world history curriculum, and the problems it has faced related to Eurocentrism and Sinocentrism. Through a description of the development of current and past curriculua, the author intends to make clear that in the traditional conceptual framework of Asia vs. Europe, the concept of Asia expanded when Korean historians and history educators attempted to solve problems about Eurocentrism in the world history curriculum. The author maintains that the multipolarization of world politics and the growth of global interdependence are the main social reasons that the world history curriculum must be expanded in scope to include non-European regions.
