Leading from Any Chair
Fleming, Gretchen
Principal Leadership, v4 n9 p14-18 May 2004
In this article, the author explains her decision to return to the classroom as a teacher after serving 15 years in public school administration. As an administrator, she found her greatest joys in transforming faculty meetings into learning situations, talking with teenagers about their success; facilitating the processes of learning; and sharing ideas with colleagues about research, new teaching strategies, and ways to increase student achievement. Unfortunately, she found she was able to spend very little time in areas that gave her great joy. For her, returning to the classroom was a good decision. This change has opened up new opportunities to lead and renewed her joy in her career. Although the classroom is the pulse of the school, her 15 years as an administrator were not wasted. Her previous leadership positions have enhanced her appreciation of the school as a whole, and she has gleaned skills from others that enhance her teaching strategies.
