Abstract:When they arrive at college, most of today's first-year students bring with them a strong desire to complete their education, yet many are also bringing serious doubts about their ability to afford it and the adequacy of their academic preparation. These findings are among the highlights of this new report on the attitudes of American first-year students at the beginning of their college experience. Also among the highlights: almost half to two-thirds of these students would like--right from the start--to receive help in areas such as career guidance and improving math skills. This new national study reveals that today's entering undergraduates are arriving on campuses highly motivated to complete their college degrees. Yet at the same time, many are bringing with them serious doubts about the adequacy of their academic preparation and their ability to afford college costs. This mixture of sentiments is--perhaps not surprisingly--also accompanied by students' strong interest in receiving immediate assistance from their college, including help with preparing for college exams, career guidance, math tutoring, and assistance with securing loans and part-time jobs.
