Abstract:This book is intended to enable educators to more fully implement the concept of leadership capacity in schools and districts. It begins by outlining the five major prerequisites for high leadership capacity: (1) skillful participation in the work of leadership; (2) inquiry-based use of data to inform decisions and practices; (3) broad involvement and collective responsibility for student learning; (4) reflective practice that leads to innovation; and (5) high or steadily improving student achievement. The chapters, titled as follows, describe the content: (1) "Deepening the Concept"; (2) "Major Participation Patterns"; (3) "The Professional Development of Leaders"; (4) "Teachers as Leaders: The Heart of the High Leadership Capacity School"; (5) "The Changing Role of the Principal"; (6) "Student Learning and Leading"; (7) "Parents as Leaders"; (8) "Time for Leadership"; (9) "District Leadership"; and (10) "Sustaining Leadership Capacity." Each chapter is accompanied by guidelines, tools, questions, and activities. The appendices contain additional activities, policies, a continuum, and a rubric and surveys administrators and teachers can use to assess their leadership skills. (WFA)
