Abstract:The tables in this publication summarize learning assistance/tutorial (LAT) programs and services, LAT personnel information, and resources and expenditures for LAT programs in California colleges and universities as of 1997-98. Highlights include: (1) 78 colleges and universities in California indicated that in the year ending June 30, 1998, they had an organized LAT program; five institutions, including three community colleges, indicated that they did not have one; (2) the majority of the programs in the state are centralized; only 17 are decentralized; (3) 40 of the 64 community college programs are housed in the Academic Affairs and Services Development; (4) LAT programs in community colleges are supervised predominately by faculty; (5) program components predominating in the community college LAT programs are tutoring, study skills, math programs, study skills and writing programs; (6) counseling is offered by less than one-third of the responding colleges; (7) workshops, seminars and formal classes are the primary methods of tutor training; (8) LAT programs in 11 of the responding community colleges are certified by the College Reading and Learning Assistance Association; and (9) the majority of the colleges use the California Tutor Project for tutor training.
